The Swedish Society of  Behavioral Medicine  (SBF) was formed in 1986 with the aim of promoting a better understanding of the relationships between factors related to behavior and health in research, teaching and clinical work. SBF is a multidisciplinary association which includes areas such as medicine, psychology, nursing, physiotherapy, social work, sociology,  management science and other areas where behavior and health intersect.

SBF currently numbers 190 members of whom about one third are active in medicine, one third in behavioral sciences and practice, and one third are more exclusively involved in research. SBF has created a behavioral medicine network that functions via e-mails, seminars, scientific meetings, personal contacts and membership in the international groups working with behavioral medicine.  An important opportunity for network members to interact is the SBF  annual scientific meeting, generally held in March every year and focussing on a theme in behavioral medicine.

SBF is a member of  the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (ISBM). ISBM is responsible for one of the leading scientific journals in the field, the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine (IJBM). Every two years, the ISBM organizes an international conference in Behavioral Medicine.  The 11th International Conference on Behavioral Medicine will take place in Washington, D.C., August 4-7, 2010.

SBF has had a prominent role in ISBM. The first international congress of behavioral medicine took place in 1990, in Sweden (Uppsala). Professor Kristina Orth-Gomer was then President of SBF and vice chairman of ISBM. Members of the SBF Steering Committee have been and are currently active in the International Society: Gunilla Burell was the ISBM President between 2002-2004, Professor Ulf Lundberg was executive editor for IJBM until 2008, and Petra Lindfors is currently ISBM treasurer.
