Alcohol and Dementia: improving understanding and practice
20th November 2012
Aim of the event
The conference aims to improve practitioner’s knowledge and understanding of the links between alcohol and dementia and of conditions that fall under the umbrella of alcohol related brain damage (ARBD). The conference will also provide evidence of best practice in services for people with ARBD that will enable attendees to improve care and support for people with ARBD in their own area.
Who is it for?
Health and social care professionals supporting people with dementia and staff working in addiction services.
This event will also be of interest to members of alcohol & drug partnership groups and voluntary organisations.
Summary of event:
Evidence would suggest that the numbers of people with ARBD are increasing and as a result of this the condition is increasingly recognised by policy makers and practitioners alike. The focus of the conference is individuals with cognitive impairment, probably dementia, which has resulted from alcohol consumption. There are many terms for such conditions so the catch-all term of ARBD is used to encompass these. Treatment, care and support for this group can be challenging and in the past individuals have often fallen between existing services: dementia services can’t manage as the individual has alcohol problems and alcohol services can’t manage as the person has cognitive impairment. However, this is changing and there are growing numbers of specialist practitioners and services developing across the UK and this is reflected in the speakers at this conference.
The conference brings together a multi-disciplinary group of academics and practitioners and the presentations will provide opportunities for improved knowledge, understanding and practice for attendees. The speakers include clinicians providing diagnosis, assessment, and ongoing support and rehabilitation; practitioners who provide care and support for people with ARBD; as well as academics from social and biological sciences. This mix of presenters will ensure that a broad range of knowledge and best practice is presented.
This event will cover:
- Alcohol and dementia, an overview
- Cognitive/neuropsychological rehabilitation for people with ARBD
- Designing environments for people with ARBD
- Training frontline staff to work with people with ARBD
- Case management for people with ARBD
- Nutrition, alcohol and the brain

The Society of Behavioral Medicine – comprising researchers and clinicians promoting health through behavioral interventions and policy change - welcomes your abstract for possible presentation at the 2013 Annual Meeting in one of America’s most exciting cities – San Francisco!
Four highly-attended poster sessions and myriad paper sessions allow students at all levels as well as researchers, practitioners, and policy advocates from such disciplines as psychology, nursing, medicine, and public health to freely exchange ideas and build networks. Abstracts will be accepted through Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time. For more information visit the 2013 SBM Annual Meeting website.
Embodying the meeting theme, “Technology: the Excitement and the Evidence,” the conference program will explore the many ways that technological innovations are expanding the reach and impact of behavioral medicine. Abstract submissions addressing thematic areas of the conference are encouraged; such topics include linking behavior to brain health, using computers to encourage behavior change, utilizing mobile sensors to enhance patient care, harnessing social media to disseminate health information, and enhancing clinicians’ capabilities to deliver smoking cessation counseling. Submissions coinciding with other behavioral medicine topics are also welcome, such as adherence, behavioral medicine in clinical and medical settings, biological mechanisms in health and behavior change, complementary and integrative medicine, environmental and contextual factors in health and behavior change, health communication and technology, health decision making, health promotion, measurement and methods, population health, policy, and advocacy, psychological and person factors in health and behavior change, quality of life, racial, ethnic, and cultural factors in health, spirituality, and translation of research to practice.
Art Kramer to Deliver Keynote
Arthur F. Kramer, PhD
Arthur F. Kramer, PhD, whose brain health research has been featured in numerous media including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, CBS Evening News, Today Show, NPR and Saturday Night Live, will deliver a keynote address at the 2013 SBM Annual Meeting.
Dr. Kramer’s research encompasses Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Aging, and Human Factors. A major focus of his lab’s recent research is the understanding and enhancement of cognitive and neural plasticity across the lifespan.
Dr. Kramer is the Director of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science & Technology and the Swanlund Chair and Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Illinois. He holds appointments in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience program, and the Beckman Institute. He is a former Associate Editor of Perception and Psychophysics and is currently a member of six editorial boards. Professor Kramer is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, a former member of the executive committee of the International Society of Attention and Performance, and a recent recipient of an NIH Ten Year MERIT Award.
David Mohr to Deliver Master Lecture
David C. Mohr, PhD
David C. Mohr, PhD, Director of Northwestern University’s Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies and a tenured professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine, will deliver a master lecture at the 2013 SBM Annual Meeting.
Dr. Mohr’s work lies at the intersection of behavioral science, technology, and clinical intervention research and is focused on developing, optimizing, and evaluating interventions that harness web-based and wireless technologies to promote health and mental health.
Currently his projects include the development of a context sensing mobile application that harnesses indwelling sensor data. The data identify the user’s specific physical, social and emotional states. Another project entails the creation of a mobile intervention that monitors adherence to medications, provides just-in-time reminders, monitors response and side effects, and provides aggregated, actionable information to prescribing physicians. This later adherence system will be tested in patients receiving pharmacotherapies for depression and HIV, with a somewhat simpler version for patients with schizophrenia.
Stay tuned for future messages profiling more keynote and master lecturers.
Pack your Walking Shoes – for Chinatown!
SFCVB photo by Sheryl Schindler.
San Francisco is a city best explored on foot but hills can pose a challenge. So, when the conference day ends, be sure and step into a pair of comfortable shoes before exploring the city’s fascinating neighborhoods. Top among them is Chinatown, about a 15-minute walk from the Hilton Union Square.
Take a map to help you get there, but no worries if you lose your itinerary; enchantment can be your guide. After passing through the flamboyant Dragon Gate entrance, you’ll find Grant Avenue, chockablock with small stores selling Chinese herbs, teas, ointments, plastic Buddhas and more. To discover how local denizens shop and bargain for produce, live turtles and chickens walk down Stockton Street, between Columbus and Broadway, on Saturday afternoon.
Many of the area’s temples and churches welcome visitors as do the numerous art galleries. History buffs, be sure and check out the Chinese Historical Society of America, dedicated to the study, documentation, and dissemination of Chinese American history, at 965 Clay Street.
Whether you crave dim sum or Dungeness crab, simplicity or opulence, hair-raising hot or more temperate Cantonese – Chinatown has it all.
Discover more information about Chinatown in the San Francisco Chinatown list of restaurants and the Chinatown Neighborhood Guide of the SFGate.
