Biomarkers of stress in relation to behaviour and different environments – Principal Supervisor, Dr Christopher Gidlow (email

Increasing epidemiological evidence links natural environment exposure with better human health. There is also mounting data from experimental research that has tried to characterise how people respond to different types of environment, to better understand how such natural environment-health effects arise. Methodological challenges make this a fertile area for research. In recent years, CSHER researchers have become established in the natural environment-health area, culminating in the European FP7-funded PHENOTYPE project (2012-2015) ( Within PHENOTYPE, we have undertaken experimental work measuring psycho-physiological responses as individuals experience urban and natural environments.

The proposed PhD project would build on this experimental work, working more closely with colleagues in Biology, to conduct further field experiments informed by final analysis (ongoing) of PHENOTYPE data, recent published research to ensure novelty, and through discussion with the PhD candidate.
